· Prior knowledge: Distinguish difference between fiction/nonfiction. Discuss students’ preference. Activities: The first 10-15 minutes of class check out books/AR Test. Students will be shown a rap video from Teacher Tube called "The Dewey Decimal Rap". The website URL is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHiUQb5xg7A Discuss: Students will learn the basics of the Dewey Decimal Classification system. Students will learn the major informational categories in each section. Students will easily locate resources in the library media center. Students will use creativity and writing skills, as well as their social skills, in a collaborative manner to develop a group’s commercial on a particular segment of Dewey. Students will have prior knowledge about the Dewey Decimal System and call numbers and be able to recall how to locate books in the library. Students will be able to demonstrate basic understanding of the Dewey Decimal System and how to use decimal number order. Students should be able to look up a book in the on-line Destiny catalog and then find it independently on the library shelves. Success will be measured in the student’s ability to select what type of books they are interested in for reading/research and the ability to locate them on the library shelves. In this level, students will have expanded their prior knowledge, learned to figure out that books on the same topic are shelved together and realize that research is easier when you know how to navigate the Dewey Decimal System.

Do they like/dislike the game. • Activities: The first 10-15 minutes of class check out books/AR Test. Play Newbery Bingo for approximately 20 minutes. Read Aloud the last 20 minutes of class. · Discuss: Awards given for Children’s Literature. The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. One or more Honor books are recognized each year as well. · Read Aloud: Continue reading from The Graveyard Book. · Review: Destiny Library tool · Closure: Requirements for Honor Club. · Review dismissal procedures and remind students about open check times and days. |
